Okanada

Synopsis

Twenty years ago, a young freelance journalist, Albert Nerenberg, smuggled a video camera through army lines during the 1990 Oka crisis – a standoff between armed Mohawk Warriors and the Canadian military. The crisis developed from a dispute between the town of Oka and the Mohawk community of Kanesatake . The Mohawk nation had been pursuing a land claim which included a burial ground and a sacred grove of pine trees near Kanesatake. This brought them into conflict with the town of Oka, which was developing plans to expand a golf course onto the land. And this conflict escalated. On September 9th, Albert made it to the Mowhawk side and spent more than two weeks capturing the day-to-day realities of life under siege. OKANADA is raw, hand-held video. Sometimes irreverent. And, always honest. Today, Albert Nerenberg continues to be one of Canada’s most creative filmmakers (www.elevatorfilms.com) and Co-director Catherine Bainbridge’s company Rezolution Pictures (Reel Injun) www.rezolutionpictures.ca brings the stories and issues of Aboriginal peoples in Canada to the screen.
